Hi mamas, I need some advice! š„² I recently enquired about violin lessons for my 5.5-year-old and was quoted $75 for 30 mins! That's like $150 an hour! š±HALF AND HOUR ..... I imagine they will go in, speak a bit, tell her to hold the bow, hold the violin, maybe not even... maybe tell her how to name the parts of the violin like here's the string, here's the scroll... put under your chin... finish. BYE $75. Cha-ching. Is this the norm now? I remember my own music lessons being way cheaper back in the day. Swimming lessons are also crazy expensiveāIāve walked up to a coach at our condo to ask for his rates cos I saw him teaching other kids, and he quoted $80ā90 per 30-min session for a 1-1 lesson. How is anyone affording this? Are there cheaper options, or is this just the reality of parenting in Singapore now? Please share your experiences!

WAH LAU EH. $75 for half an hour !? š± I thought my $60 piano lessons r bad enough ... But honestly , I think its all abt the teacherās credentials . If they r super qualified , they can charge whatever they want . Singaporean parents will jus pay . I m a bit kiasu , so I dun mind paying more for someone w a good track record . Swimming is the same ā I pay $55 per session, but my kids got improve , so cant complain . Have you asked othr mums for referral? Sometimes word-of-mouth recommendations can lead to better deals.
Honestly, Iāve stopped stressing about the cost of these classes. Yes, theyāre expensive, but I remind myself that itās just a season of life. My kids wonāt be young forever, and if these classes bring them joy and help them grow, then itās worth it to me. That said, I do set a budget and stick to it. We do one music class and one sports activity at a time, and I make sure to compare prices before committing. Itās all about balance, I guess. Hang in there, @mamabear88 ā youāre not alone in this!
Hi everyone! Iām a first-time mum, and reading this thread is making me nervous. š I didnāt realise how expensive these classes are! My baby is only 1, but Iām already thinking about what activities to enrol her in later. Are there any mums here whoāve tried those trial classes? Iāve seen some ads, but Iām not sure if itās worth it. Also, do you think itās better to start them young or wait until theyāre older? Sorry for all the questionsāIām still figuring this parenting thing out!
$75 for half an hour?! That's daylight robbery! š¤ But honestly, it's not surprising nowadays. I pay $80 for my son's piano lessons, and itās with a teacher who comes highly recommended. Iāve seen cheaper options, but Iām not willing to compromise on quality. Swimming is the sameāI pay $50 per session, but the coach is fantastic, and my kid is actually learning. I think itās all about priorities. If you want the best, you have to pay for it. But if youāre on a tight budget, maybe look for group classes or student teachers? Theyāre usually cheaper.
OMG @mamabear88, I feel you! š© I was shook when I saw the prices for violin lessons last year. Ended up paying $70 for 45mins lesson, and that was after shopping around. Swimming is no better ā my sonās classes are $50 per 30min session, and thatās considered āreasonableā in my area. Honestly, I think itās just SG being SG lah. Everything here is expensive, especially when it comes to kids. But I tell myself itās an investment in their development⦠or at least thatās what I keep repeating to my wallet. š
